DEF and SCR Basics for Diesel Pickups

Updated August 19, 2026 · Diesel Pickup Trucks

If you own a modern diesel pickup, you live with DEF and the SCR system whether you understand them or not. A little knowledge keeps them from becoming an inconvenient (and derating) surprise.

What DEF and SCR do

SCR (selective catalytic reduction) is the part of the emissions system that reduces NOx. It works by injecting DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) — a precise mix of urea and deionized water — into the hot exhaust, where it breaks down NOx into harmless nitrogen and water. DEF is stored in its own tank with a blue cap, separate from your fuel.

You’ll use it regularly

DEF is consumed at roughly 2-3% of fuel use, so a pickup that tows and drives a lot goes through it noticeably. The gauge or message center shows the level. Refill it before it gets low — DEF is cheap and available at any truck stop or parts store in jugs.

Why running out derates the truck

This catches people off guard: if the DEF tank runs empty, the truck derates by design — first reduced power, then a severe speed limit, and it may not restart until DEF is added. It’s not a malfunction; emissions law requires it. The fix is simple — add proper DEF and cycle the key — but it’s avoidable embarrassment. Don’t let the tank run dry.

DEF quality matters

  • Use only proper DEF that meets the ISO 22241 standard. Never put DEF in the fuel tank or fuel in the DEF tank — either is a very expensive mistake.
  • Keep it clean. Contaminated DEF clogs the injector/doser and triggers faults.
  • Mind shelf life and heat. DEF degrades over time and in high heat. Buy what you’ll use; don’t store jugs for years in a hot truck bed.
  • It freezes at about 12°F (not usually a Lowcountry worry) — the system is designed to handle it, so don’t add anything to prevent freezing.

Watch for system faults

Beyond running out, the SCR system can throw faults from a bad NOx sensor, a clogged DEF injector/doser, a heater fault, or contaminated fluid. These show as warning lights and, if ignored, escalate to a derate. A NOx sensor is a modest repair caught early.

Keep it simple

Keep DEF topped with clean, proper fluid, don’t let it run empty, and don’t ignore SCR warning lights. That’s 90% of living happily with the system.
